Who were the Anglo-Saxons?

By the time the Romans decided to leave England around 410 AD, there were numerous raids by invaders from all sides of the English isles. These invaders mainly belonged to the tribes called the Saxons, the Jutes, the Angles, and the Frisians.

The Angles and the Saxons came to England from Denmark and took control of the land previously controlled by the Romans and the Celts. Their homelands in Scandinavia often flooded which made it difficult to grow enough food. With their invasion was born a new Anglo-Saxon culture and several distinct kingdoms emerged.

The name Anglo Saxon comes from the two tribes of Angles and Saxons, and they ruled parts of England for some 600 years.
